Grand Theft Auto VI Delayed To May 26th, 2026
Ask any gamer alive what their most anticipated game of 2025 is, and most have one answer: Grand Theft Auto VI. Unfortunately, everyone is going to have a while longer. The open-world crime video game was set to release sometime this year, but has been delayed to May 26th, 2026. Rockstar Games announced the delay in a statement published on their social media accounts and wrote, "We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game."
This isn't entirely unexpected, as Rockstar's game library has been littered with at least one delay following their announcement. However, this delay presents an interesting opportunity for other publishers, as many are considering delays to avoid competing with Grand Theft Auto VI. If that rumor bears fruit, I'd expect to see a ton of publishers suddenly provide release dates for games releasing in October & November 2025.
While I'm personally disappointed that Grand Theft Auto VI won't be in my hands this year, I'd rather the game live up to the expectations I've had for it since finishing Grand Theft Auto V in 2013. My expectations are vague, except for wanting to enter every building I see. Particularly since I know nothing about the game beyond its trailer, released on December 4th, 2023.
The game is set in a modern-day Vice City modeled after Miami and South Florida. It appears to star dual protagonists, Lucia and Jason, including the first female lead in the series. However, Rockstar has yet to confirm these character details or their relationship.
Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X, with a PC version yet to be confirmed. If a PC version is announced, though, it'll likely arrive much later, like Grand Theft Auto V.
