My Thoughts
I’ll keep this brief, but I want to share my thoughts on the nominees. Having been a voting member of OFTA for the past three years, I can say that we often go against the grain with our awards picks while still allowing for big blockbusters to shine.
Identifying a standout, a surprise, or a snub is challenging since I anticipated most of these nominations. However, I was shocked by the performances of three films: Deadpool & Wolverine, Emilia Pérez, and Wicked.
With Deadpool & Wolverine, I predicted it would either perform exceptionally well or poorly. Ultimately, it received nominations for Best Adapted Song, Best Sound Effects, Best Stunt Coordination, and Best Titles Sequence, placing it in the middle of the pack. So, this film seems to resonate with some, but not everyone, which I find interesting.
Regarding Emilia Pérez, I expected it to perform much better, especially considering it received 129 nominations throughout the awards season. Surprisingly, the film only garnered three nominations: Zoe Saldaña for Best Supporting Actress, Best Foreign Language Film, and El Mal for Best Original Song. This underperformance was unexpected.
Lastly, I was surprised to see Wicked nominated in over half of the categories, totaling 19 nominations. Not because it isn’t a good movie—because it is—but I was skeptical about how my fellow OFTA members would respond. Regardless, I’m pleased with the outcome, even though films like Anora or The Brutalist could have been more fitting nominees in their place.
Those are my thoughts on the nominees. If you’d like to see what I nominated, my nominee ballot is live now on my Patreon for members at $3 and above. If you’ll excuse me, I have about 20 films to watch before casting my final ballot on February 19th, which will also be available for Patreon members at $3 and above.
